Basketball & Activism: Helping our Asian American Elders!

The Basketball program is incredibly proud to share the work of some of our players as they seek to uplift the Boston Asian American Community.

Boston Hurricanes Basketball players Ryan Ho, Justin Mok, Alex MacKay, Kyle Ho, and Brendan Szeto responded swiftly to hate crimes against the Asian American Community by raising funds to distribute personal safety devices to elderly Asian Americans in the Boston Chinatown area. When activated, these personal safety devices create a loud noise to surprise potential attackers and alert surrounding individuals that someone needs help.

Due to an outpouring of support, the boys' GoFundMe page raised over $4,000 within 48 hours, surpassing their original goal of $2,000. In partnership with various Asian community organizations, they plan to distribute the devices sometime in May. The boys hope their goal to combat AAPI hate crimes in Boston will empower other kids to step up alongside them.
